Hon. Yusuf Abdulwaheed Ayinde Gbenga, representing Eesa/Shawo/Igboidun Constituency at the Kwara State House of Assembly earlier today presented a giant trophy to the Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria (YSFON), Offa chapter, for an annual football competition.
While presenting the trophy at his Office inside the Assembly Complex, Hon. Abdulwaheed, who is the Chairman, House Committee on Energy explained that the tournament was introduced to raise the standard of football in Offa and Kwara state at large, noting that the state is known for talents discovery and that the tradition should not be allowed to go into extinction.
He also said that he is sponsoring the tournament to further demonstrate his passion and love for the game of football.
He pointed out that football development from the grassroots need to be fully supported as the likes of late Rashidi Yekini, Dele Aiyenugba and Taiwo Awoniyi were products of grassroots football.
News Hub Mag! reports that the tournament will feature 32 youth teams, and would be played on three pitches in Offa, with the final expected to hold at the Oloffa Stadium.
Also, overall winners will smile home with the sum of N150,000, while the first and second runners-up will get N100, 000 and N75, 000 respectively.
There would also be consolation prizes for the Best Goalkeeper, Most Valuable Player, Highest Goal Scorer, Best Coach and Fair Play award.
The Honourable further charged organisers to use the opportunity to further encourage unity and oneness among Kwara youths, even as he urged them to ensure there is fair officiating all through the tournament.
Earlier in his speech, the State Chairman of YSFON, Mallam Ademola Kiyesola commended Hon. Abdulwaheed for setting the pace in grassroots football development with the sponsorship of the inaugural edition of the Honourable’s Cup competition.
While commending him for been the first in the 9th Assembly to support the youths through sports, he stressed that the tournament will provide the youths the needed platform to showcase their talents and positive engagement towards professionalism.
