Finally, President Muhammadu Buhari has addressed the nation concerning the unrest currently rocking the country.
However, rather than quell the anger and agitation of Nigerians, especially the youths, the address has only increased the disappointment of many.
News Hub Mag! reports that this is largely due to the President’s refusal to mention the shootings of peaceful protesters at Lekki toll plaza on Tuesday night which prompted both national and international outrage.
It would be recalled that the military opened fire without warning on thousands of peaceful protesters singing the national anthem Tuesday night, killing at least 12 people, according to Amnesty International.
However, rather than pay tribute to the souls lost and assure retribution for those found culpable the president called on Nigeria youths “to discontinue the street protests and constructively engage the government in finding solutions. Your voice has been heard loud and clear and we are responding,” he said.
The president in the live broadcast which is suspected to be a pre-recorded video as the cut and play stuck out, urged the youths not to undermine national security.
In his words, “I would like to appeal to protestors to note and take advantage of the various well thought-out initiatives of this administration designed to make their lives better and more meaningful and resist the temptation of being used by some subversive elements to cause chaos with the aim of truncating our nascent democracy,” said Buhari in his televised address. “For you to do otherwise will amount to undermining national security and law and order … Under no circumstances would this be tolerated.”
It would be recalled that the street demonstrations began early this month with calls for Nigeria’s government to shut down the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, a police unit known as SARS.
Although the squad was established to fight crime, but it allegedly became notorious for torture and killings.
Reactions to the president’s on the social media berated the president Buhari for insensitivity among other things.
A comment reads; “Buhari speech is a classical example of “Quality Information wey no concern us”.
Nobody held accountable.
No empathy shown.
And oh “International Communities, mind your business”👀
Another one reads; “Is Buhari’s memory so short that he forgot about the Lekki shooting? Youth, the world is yours, grab it with both hands and please keep up your strength. #EndSARS”
Another comment reads; “I think I’m the only one that didn’t hear when the President spoke about the citizens that were murdered at Lekki and all other places in the country”
“Did I really stay up for this!? I’m out of words. At this point I can’t tell if there’s HOPE! I can’t!!” reads another reaction
“Buhari is more concerned about the people stopping Protests than working on what the people actually want“, another tweet read.
