Come Saturday, October 26, 2019 the ancient town of Ayetoro-Gbede in Ijumu local government area of Kogi State will be agog as the first Iyalode of the town is installed at Ayetoro Gbede Township Hall.
This is coming on the heels of approval by the Oba-in-Council under the leadership of Oba David Ehindero, the Olu of Ayetoro Gbede and Regent Olugbede of Gbede land who has approved Hajia Tolani Salawu, a prolific author and philanthropist for the prestigious title.

Iyálóde, which can be translated to mean ”queen of women” is a title bestowed on the most influential and prominent woman in a Yoruba community by the Òba. She is usually a respected woman. An important support of the Òba, Iyalode is the spokesperson when it comes to political demands on behalf of the women folks.
The Iyálòde influences the women folks on matters relating to peace, unity and development of the community. She interacts with the Òba and Council of chiefs on behalf of the women, gives feedback on the views of the women concerning sensitive issues or what their expectations as the mothers to the community are.
As time goes on, it may be necessary to begin to have assistance or lieutenants like otun iyalode, oshi iyalode and èkèrin iyalode to assist the Iyalode in her duties. This selections are done by the iyálòde and the council of chiefs subsequent to approval by the Òba.
The choice of Hajia (Mrs) Tolani Salawu as the Iyalode is also in recognition of her philanthropy, positive contributions to human development, and promotion of peace and unity in the community.
In line with the established process of filling such an important position, council of chiefs and development wings of Ayetoro Gbede have sought the consent of the Iyalode in waiting in this regard on behalf of the selection committee and she has presented her acceptance to the selection committee for final ratification.
