Ex-President’s son commits suicide

Alvaro Echeverria Zuno, 71, son of a former president of Mexico, Luis Echeverria Alvarez, has been reported dead by local prosecutors office.

Zuno, it was gathered, killed himself and his corpse was found in his apartment in the state of Morelos, south of Mexico City, on Tuesday morning.

Zuno’s father, Alvarez governed in 1970 as president with an iron fist. The former president, 98, governed the country between 1970-1976 and, is till date, considered the main person responsible for Mexico’s “dirty war”, which featured the targeted assassinations and forced disappearance of students, leftist activists, and guerrillas by government agents.

While Echeverria was interior minister in the government of Gustavo Diaz Ordaz (1964-1970), the worst massacre in the history of modern Mexico, in October 1968 to 10 days before the opening of the Olympic Games in Mexico City.

It was reported then that hundreds of unarmed students and demonstrators were massacred when soldiers and undercover agents opened fire on them at a plaza in the Mexico City neighborhood of Tlatelolco.

In 2006 Echevarria faced genocide charges, but given his age was granted home prison and eventually given conditional freedom.
