KWSG committed to commercial agricultural practice -Alakawa

The Kwara State Government has again expressed its commitment in making Kwara State the food hub of the country through sustainable commercial agricultural practice.

The State Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mallam AbdulLateef Gidado Alakawa gave this disclosure during a courtesy call visit by the Nigerian Institution of Agricultural Engineering (NIAE) at the Ministry Headquarters in Ilorin.

The Commissioner said that the present administration is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that the State is sufficient in food production through its all-year-round farming programme.

Speaking on the role of Agricultural Engineers in food production and its value chain in the country, Mallam Alakawa explained that the importance of the Institution cannot be overemphasized adding that the State Government through the Ministry of Agriculture had organized various capacity workshops for Engineering Personnel and the Area Extension Officers of the Ministry on modern techniques on good agronomy practice.

“As an impetus to the State Government commitment to commercial agricultural practice in the State, the present administration procured two number of bulldozers, 15 new tractors and soon to be launched Irrigation facilities Equipment in addition to the clearing of 100 hectares of land in Agbeyangi Community in Ilorin East LGA and 500 cleared hectares of land in Adanla Community in Ifelodun LGA of the State as a pilot Scheme under Farm Kwara Initiative,” he said.

News Hub Mag! reports that Mallam Alakawa further assured the Institution of more support in training and re-training of its members, and provision of enabling environment for the practice of the agricultural engineering profession among other areas of collaboration.

Earlier, the National Chairman, Nigerian Institution of Agricultural Engineering, Prof. Akindele Folarin Alonge had informed the Commissioner that the body is in the State to seek the support of the State Government to register the Ministry’s staff for engineering exams and also to sponsor the State delegate to the forthcoming International Conference and 42nd Annual General Meeting in Asaba, Delta State with a view to motivate them in discharging their statutory duties.

Prof. Alonge who is a professor of Agricultural Engineering from the University of Uyo, lauded State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq’s achievements in agricultural sector urging him to sustain the pace.
