NERC suspends electricity tariff increment

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has ordered the 11 DisCos in the country to suspend the tariffs increment, which was to take effect today (April 1), citing the ravaging COVID-19 pandemic as reason.

The NERC said yesterday via its Twitter handle, “There shall be no increase in tariff of end-use customers on April 1, 2020.”

The Twitter post was later confirmed by the commission’s spokesman, Usman Arabi.

News Hub Mag! reports that the planned increment had attracted widespread condemnations and rejection by groups and individuals who insisted that the quality of service remains unacceptable.

Also yesterday, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) had condemned the plan to increase electricity tariff.

A statement by the NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, hinged its condemnation on the position that it would inflict more pains on Nigerians who are already burdened by the COVID-19 pandemic and its economic effects.

News Hub Mag! recalls that the NERC had served notice in December 2019 of its plan to increase electricity tariff from April 1, 2020.
